Our Mission…
The African Studies Graduate Student Association
(ASGSA) serves as a resource for graduate students
to dialogue, debate, and exchange ideas and
research on Africa and the African diasporas.
Who We Are…
Founded in 2003, ASGSA is a membership based
organization of graduate students studying African
Studies at Howard University. ASGSA raises
awareness on Africa related issues that are of
interest to our members and the Howard community.

African Studies at Howard University is an
interdisciplinary endeavor. ASGSA members
research Africa from a range of disciplines, such as,
politics and development, arts and literature, culture,
language, history, and international relations. ASGSA
encourages discourse amongst students and
students with faculty to develop and deepen their
research areas.
What we do…
ASGSA offers a support network for graduate students
in every phase of their academic journey at Howard.
The association organizes forums, palavers,
academic conferences, workshops, study groups,
social networking events and orientations for
students. We also serve as a clearinghouse for
information on internships, fellowships, grants,
academic conferences, calls for papers, study
abroad, language study, and jobs. We keep an open
line of communication between students and the
faculty and staff of the Department of African Studies.
